The writing’s on the wall for Google Stadia

After fourteen months, Google has decided it doesn’t want to be a game company anymore. Where once it had its own cloud-based console, controller, and the promise of homegrown triple-A games, it no longer wants to build its own games as of today.

And though a Google spokesperson emphasizes that the company continues to “remain committed to Stadia as a platform,” it’s looking increasingly likely that platform won’t be a service where you sign up with Google to buy and rent cloud games.

Stadia boss Phil Harrison announced that Google was shutting down the company’s game studios in a memo today, and I think the exact wording of that memo is extremely telling. Go read it for yourself. I’ll wait.

This isn’t a typical entry in our long-running “Google kills product” series, but it’s close enough: Google is shutting down its first-ever dedicated game studios, which had been founded as part of its beleaguered Google Stadia cloud-gaming service.

Kotaku editor Stephen Totilo confirmed the news on Monday ahead of Google posting its own formal statement on the matter, and it means Stadia Games and Entertainment will soon be no more, according to “one source…

Google to restrict third-party Chromium browsers’ access to Chrome sync » TechnoCodex

In a recent blog post, Google announced it would restrict some Chrome-specific features, like sync and ‘Click to Call,’ that found their way into third-party Chromium browsers.

For those unfamiliar with Chromium, it’s an open-source browser project largely managed by Google. Chromium forms the foundation for Google’s Chrome browser, as well as a variety of other browsers including Microsoft’s new Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and more. Chromium is also available as a browser on its own, although it relies on several Google services for features like Safe Browsing.
