Hackers hit web hosting provider linked to Oregon elections

A week before Oregon’s primary election, the secretary of state’s office is moving to protect the integrity of its online system where campaign finance records are published after a web hosting provider was hit by a ransomware attack.

Secretary of State Shemia Fagan’s office said people inputting records into the ORESTAR state campaign finance reporting system may have been affected, and have been sent detailed instructions on how to proceed.

“The Oregon Secretary of State has not been hacked,” Fagan’s office reassured voters in a statement late Monday. “No sensitive data on our systems has been exposed. No systems related to elections administration have been compromised.”

By Tuesday, one-tenth of registered voters had already cast their ballots for the May 17 primary…

‘Anonymous’ hackers claim to hit website hosting firm popular with Proud Boys

The more than 150 gigabytes of data swept up in the breach shine a light on years of online activities from far-right groups, including those who tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election. While researchers are still sifting through the data, Epik has historically provided web hosting services to an array of conspiracy theorists, and for conservative media networks like Parler and Gab.

Web hosting service Exabytes hit by ransomware attack, still restoring services

PETALING JAYA: Exabytes, a Penang-based web hosting service, was hit by a ransomware attack over the weekend, though it claims most of its services have since been restored.

The ransomware, which occurred at 5am on Sept 18, disrupted its services, mainly its Windows VPS (virtual private server) and Windows hosting services.

In a post on 4.23am on Sept 19, the company said it had concluded a management meeting and will initiate its recovery plan immediately.

The company’s data restoration effort stands at 80% as of 3pm on Sept 20, said Exabytes CEO and founder Chan Kee Siak.

“The matter is under investigation now and we are unable to provide any further information on this at this moment.
