A copyright battle has spawned a sweeping order demanding internet service providers block a set of pirate sites — one of the broadest such rulings to date.

As TorrentFreak recently reported, a New York district judge ruled in late April on a series of copyright lawsuits against three sites that rebroadcast mostly Hebrew-language television. The rightsholders demanded monetary damages from the site operators — who didn’t show up in court — and an injunction meant to prevent viewers from accessing the services. Parler has withdrawn its antitrust action against Amazon, two months after filing the case against the tech giant.

The website was removed from Amazon’s Web Services (AWS) hosting platform in January for violating its rules.

Parler brands itself as a “free speech” social network and the platform is popular with far-right supporters.

It has now dropped the case, without providing an explanation, but “without prejudice to refiling” it in the future.

Amazon suspended use of its platform after the rioting on Capitol Hill, following the US presidential election.

It claimed it had discovered 98 posts on Parler that encouraged violence, and notified the social network about them.

The social media platform Parler marketed itself as a place where Americans could “speak freely” and avoid the fear of being “deplatformed.” Its investors included conservative donor Rebekah Mercer, who described Parler as “a beacon to all who value their liberty.” But Parler was never any sort of wholly independent island of absolutely free speech.
