Following a ransomware attack that occurred at the end of November, the web hosting and IT service provider Netgain has been forced to take some of its data centers offline.

The company provides hosting and cloud IT solutions to organizations in the healthcare and accounting industry and this may be why it was targeted by cybercriminals in the first place.

Local governments forced offline after ransomware targets web host

Several state and local government agencies around the United States have had their web presences taken out following a ransomware attack against a web hosting provider the agencies share.

The provider, Managed.com, was targeted with the REvil malware in an incident that appears to have started Monday. The company has said it took down the entirety of its web hosting services, according to ZDNet, which was first to report the incident. Those services include managed website hosting, email and file-transfer servers and remote access points.

Ransomware attack takes web hosting provider Managed.com servers offline

One of the internet’s biggest web hosting providers has been forced to shut down all of its servers after suffering a ransomware attack. 

Managed.com, which provides CMS-optimized platforms for small businesses and enterprise-level clients, initially only took down a small number of customer sites on November 16 when the attack first become apparent. Hours later, however, it was forced to close down its entire web hosting infrastructure.

It has been reported that Managed.com, one of the biggest providers of managed web hosting solutions, has taken down all its servers in order to deal with a ransomware attack. The ransomware impacted the company’s public-facing web hosting systems resulting in some of the customer sites having their data encrypted.The company is now working with law enforcement to identify the attackers and also working on to restore their customers’ data which were lost as part of this attack. This included WordPress and DotNetNuke managed hosting solutions, email servers, DNS servers, RDP access points, FTP servers, and online databases.

The attack took place on Monday, November 16, and the ransomware impacted the company’s public-facing web hosting systems, resulting in some customer sites having their data encrypted.
