Social media posts falsely claim Nicola Bulley’s husband has been arrested and charged with murder

False claims that Paul Ansell, the husband of the late Nicola Bulley, has been arrested or charged with murder have been shared thousands of times on Facebook this month.

Lancashire Police told Full Fact that the information in these posts is “completely false”.

The two posts, both shared to the same so-called “crime news” page on social media, wrongly claim that Mr Ansell was arrested after being spotted on CCTV close to the site where Ms Bulley’s body was found in the River Wyre in Lancashire on 19 February 2023.

The mother-of-two had been reported missing several weeks earlier on 27 January. Ms Bulley’s disappearance gained significant attention both in traditional media outlets and on social media, with her family previously criticising those who…

Hoax posts about ‘missing’ man ‘Martin Jones’ recirculating on social media

Hoax posts claiming that an elderly man with dementia named Martin Jones has gone missing with his dog have been shared on social media.

The posts say: “My uncle Mr Martin Jones aged 79 drove out with our dog Baxter and he hasn’t returned. He doesn’t know where he’s going, he has dementia. There is a silver alert activated on him. Please help bump this post so we can get him home safely.”

We have written about fake appeals for the whereabouts of “Martin Jones” before. The picture used in the posts, of a man wearing a dark jacket and cap holding a small dog, is taken from a post thanking a local volunteer for a community group in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The post is likely to have originated in the US as it makes a reference to a “silver alert”—a…

Posts about a lost woman with dementia are a hoax

Posts on Facebook are appealing for people to identify a woman they claim has dementia and is lost. But these appeals are a hoax, and follow the same pattern as other hoaxes we have checked before.

The posts claim that the woman and her dog have arrived at a shelter but that she “doesn’t know where she is”.

The posts have been shared in community Facebook groups across the world, and begin with: “URGENT ALERT! FLOOD YOUR FEEDS! does anyone recognise this lady?”

They end with: “Please help us find her home”.

The posts all use identical wording, with different locations, and have the same photo of an elderly woman. The appeals have appeared on community groups across the country, including Maidenhead in Berkshire, Rugeley in Staffordshire and Crewe in…
