Palworld Is Now The Most Played Game On Steam And Its Servers Are Struggling To Keep Up

palworld cattiva production line banner

Palworld is proving to be ridiculously popular as it skyrockets to the top of Steam’s most played games list just two days after its early access launch. The Pokémon-styled multiplayer survival game set an all-time peak concurrency of 1,291,967 players last night, claiming the top spot on the daily list and leaving Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 far behind on the all-time list.

It’s worth noting that the game is also available on Xbox Game Pass which means that Steam players represent just a fraction of the game’s total player count. If the trend continues, Palworld is set to break Dota 2’s all-time peak concurrency record. It’s also currently the top-selling game on Steam, surpassing Valve’s Steam Deck and Counter-Strike 2 in terms of revenue.

Palworld’s popularity,…

‘Future servers could have a shared DPU’: Could the next decade see a rise in socket heterogeneity?

Most servers in today’s enterprise computing landscape adopt a dual-socket format configuration rather than a single-socket one – meaning it can house dual processors that work in tandem, rather than just one. While it might sound fool-proof in theory, theoretically doubling performance without altering the server footprint, today’s cutting-edge technology means it may not be necessary – and it could actually be much cheaper and more efficient to switch to a single-socket server.

This is the subject of a blog post written by Robert Hormuth, AMD‘s corporate vice president, architecture and strategy – data center solutions group. In it, Hormuth argues single-socket servers are occasionally better than a dual-socket machine. Why? Frankly, the best processors today are more than…
