Tears, applause, singing and dancing as Irish town celebrates Sinead O’Connor

There was a cauldron of emotions as complex as one of Sinead O’Connor’s albums in the Irish town she called home for 15 years when well wishers gathered to say a final farewell to the singer.

The seaside town of Bray gave O’Connor a relatively quiet life for 15 years in an understated house on the main street overlooking the Irish Sea.

The house, Montebello, has become a place of pilgrimage for O’Connor’s fans since news of her death last month, with crowds arriving daily to lay flowers and reflect on her life and music.

A simple pink chair sits outside the pink-framed conservatory, with pink flowers, candles and a photo of the singer, as well as a host of floral tributes.

Islamic community prayed for Sinead O’Connor at ‘moving and spiritual’ funeral

Sinead O’Connor had a “moving and private” funeral featuring Islamic prayers ahead of a funeral procession along a waterfront in Ireland.

The Chief Imam at the Islamic Centre of Ireland, who delivered Sinead O’Connor’s funeral prayer, said O’Connor “never moved away from God” unlike others who have “difficulties and trials” in their lives.

Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri told the PA news agency: “The funeral was obviously private (for) the family and it was a very moving ceremony and I think it really reflected the beautiful personality of Sinead.

“It was very spiritual and it reflected her Irish identity as well as her Muslim identity.

Sinead O’Connor’s remains released to family – reports

Sinead O’Connor’s remains have been released to her family following a post-mortem examination to determine a cause of death, according to reports.

The Irish Grammy-winning singer was found unresponsive by police at her home in south-east London last week, with her death at the age of 56 being treated as not suspicious.

The Irish Times reported on Thursday that the clerk of the London Inner South Coroner’s Court, John Thompson, has confirmed an “autopsy was conducted to secure a medical cause of death”.

The newspaper said a statement issued by Mr Thompson on behalf of senior coroner Andrew Harris stated the post-mortem examination report may not be received “for some weeks”.
