Anti-Cheat, Code-Signed Driver Abused to Bypass Privileges and Deploy Ransomware

Trend Micro researchers observed a ransomware infection in late July 2022 that involved a code-signed driver called “mhyprot2.sys”, which is used for anti-cheat functions in the video game Genshin Impact. The currently undisclosed ransomware abused this driver to bypass privileges and disable anti-virus software. A notable observation by researchers is that Genshin Impact does not need to be installed on a victim’s machine for this ransomware to be deployed, as the use of the driver is independent from the video game and can be integrated into any malware. Satisfactory is a fun game that lets you build your own set of factories. You can either do it alone or with other people via dedicated servers. That said, the dev team found that some bugs have caused dedicated servers to crash, which is why they launched a new patch that resolves these issues.

Update v0.6.0.2 brings plenty of bug fixes, some of which help address issues concerning dedicated servers. One, dedicated servers will no longer crash when it fails to bind to a port. Next, the crash that may occur when the server settings file is corrupted has been fixed. When this happens, the server will just use the default settings instead.

The latest Bigscreen update makes big improvements to user-hosted rooms and remote desktop capabilities when streaming, alongside an increase in room capacity and other changes.

Shanks, one of Bigscreen’s developers, posted details of the update to Reddit. While there’s a lot of changes, the overwhelming theme of the update is improving the experience and video quality of rooms that use remote desktop and Windows PC desktop streaming.

Previously, a desktop PC stream shared in a user-hosted room with others would feature choppy video, low bitrate and an unreliable connection at times. With this new update, these connections should be much more reliable.
