Straight from CF’s blog post on APO: “Once APO is enabled, all those trips to the origin are removed. TTFB benefits greatly because the first hop starts and ends at Cloudflare’s network.”
I believe that portion was referring to static HTML.
You will have to watch out for the clever wording when you read first party articles. To be able to eliminate round trips, a CDN (or APO in this case) needs a ‘helper’ on the server, which a CDN often doesn’t have. In case of Cloudflare APO, it has a WP plugin…
