Popular VPNs have just disappeared from the Apple App Store in Russia

At least four of the best VPN services have reportedly disappeared from the Apple App Store in Russia as of Thursday, July 4, 2024. 

The news comes as two of the providers affected (Red Shield VPN and Le VPN) have shared the communication they received from Apple to notify the removal “per demand from Roskomnadzor,” the Russian censor body, for including “content that is illegal in Russia.” NordVPN and Proton VPN also appear to have been removed.

OpenAI just bought a video conferencing app — and it could mean big things for the future of collaboration

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Multi, a startup formerly known as Remotion, which creates multiplayer collaboration, screen-sharing and video conferencing software.

The deal follows OpenAI’s recent purchase of databased technology firm Rockset, highlighting its expansion beyond generative AI chatbots into the enterprise online collaboration market.

‘Vortax’ Meeting App Builds Elaborate Branding, Spreads Infostealers

A widespread campaign aimed at stealing cryptocurrency is spreading a wave of infostealers through fake virtual meeting software for both macOS and Windows platforms, particularly targeting the former with the dangerous Atomic stealer.

Discovered by Recorded Future’s Insikt Group, the campaign attributed to a threat actor dubbed “Markopolo” is responsible for an elaborate Web and social media presence for a fake app called Vortax, according to a report (PDF) published this week.

Vortax is purported to be virtual meeting software for various platforms but actually is a delivery mechanism for three infostealers: Rhadamanthys, Stealc, and Atomic, the researchers found. Google and Apple are hosting an app dedicated to TheDonald and other far-right forums that were banned from Reddit

Google and Apple’s app stores have been hosting an app for Scored, a message board site dedicated to hosting far-right forum TheDonald — which was previously banned on Reddit and rebranded as “patriots.win” after January 6 — and other far-right forums pushing extremism and conspiracy theories. The site, which researchers have called “an alternative Reddit platform that shelter[s] banned fringe communities,” is supposedly owned by the lead moderator of TheDonald who apparently “made the site” for the forum.

TheDonald originally began on Reddit as “r/The_Donald,” with the subreddit dedicated to supporting Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent presidency. It was known for spreading and promoting far-right misinformation
