National Disability Employee Awareness Month is in October — and Long Beach plans to honor that by hosting its first job fair for people with disabilities.

The city has partnered with the Disabled Resources Center, Mental Health America of Los Angeles, the California Department of Rehabilitation and Pacific Gateway Network to put on the job fair, which will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Civic Center Plaza and City Hall Lobby.

Long Beach is home to nearly 50,000 residents with disabilities, according to the city’s press release. A third of those people are unemployed and continue to face barriers of preconceived notions obstructing many employment opportunities, the city said. Registration of resume, application for vacancies and job orientation, were part of the services offered to more than 100 people with disabilities attending the Labor Inclusion Fair, held this Thursday by the Comfacesar Employment Management and Placement Agency.

The event carried out with the support of the Ministry of Labor, the Public Employment Service, the Mayor’s Office of Valledupar, the Government of Cesar and the Mercy Corps International Agency, had as its main objective linking companies so that they become inclusive by placing workers this population and thus join efforts to improve the social fabric of the region.

BEDFORD — The Bedford Veterans Affairs Health Care System is hosting the Women Veterans’ Health & Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 10 at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Hospital to coincide with Women Veterans Day on June 12 and to highlight the PACT Act.

Bedford VA spokesperson Patrick Kirby said the fair is open for all veterans so that they can view health and wellness demonstrations, enroll in VA health care and get screenings for toxic exposure resulting from their service.
