‘Anonymous’ hackers claim to hit website hosting firm popular with Proud Boys

The more than 150 gigabytes of data swept up in the breach shine a light on years of online activities from far-right groups, including those who tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election. While researchers are still sifting through the data, Epik has historically provided web hosting services to an array of conspiracy theorists, and for conservative media networks like Parler and Gab.

The breach also undercuts Epik’s pledge to customers that it can safeguard their anonymity, no matter what dangerous conspiracy theories they spread online. For that reason, experts told CNN the hack could have repercussions for how far-right groups organize and try to protect themselves online.

Web hosting service Exabytes hit by ransomware attack, still restoring services

PETALING JAYA: Exabytes, a Penang-based web hosting service, was hit by a ransomware attack over the weekend, though it claims most of its services have since been restored.

The ransomware, which occurred at 5am on Sept 18, disrupted its services, mainly its Windows VPS (virtual private server) and Windows hosting services.

In a post on 4.23am on Sept 19, the company said it had concluded a management meeting and will initiate its recovery plan immediately.

The company’s data restoration effort stands at 80% as of 3pm on Sept 20, said Exabytes CEO and founder Chan Kee Siak.

“The matter is under investigation now and we are unable to provide any further information on this at this moment.

Another web hosting giant has been hit by a fire

The Los Angeles-based web hosting provider WebNX recently experienced a fire at its Ogden data center in Utah which took the websites of some of its customers offline.

Unlike the major fire that recently took the French web host OVH offline, WebNX’s problems began with a city-wide power disruption. As is often the case in such a situation, the company’s backup generators automatically switched on following the power outage. However, one of the older backup generators caught fire and the Ogden fire department was called in.

Experts Insight On Web Hosting Giant Managed.com Hit By Ransomware And Taken Offline

It has been reported that Managed.com, one of the biggest providers of managed web hosting solutions, has taken down all its servers in order to deal with a ransomware attack. The ransomware impacted the company’s public-facing web hosting systems resulting in some of the customer sites having their data encrypted.The company is now working with law enforcement to identify the attackers and also working on to restore their customers’ data which were lost as part of this attack. This included WordPress and DotNetNuke managed hosting solutions, email servers, DNS servers, RDP access points, FTP servers, and online databases.
